5) Green Crimes – to be reported or to be ignored?

In order to protect environment and nature, life of environmental journalist or activist is in jeopardy and danger. Their life has been threatened by company, organized crime groups, government and pollutants. Death threat, libel suits, abduction, physical assault always lingered in their life. It is proven by several cases that happened to some them due to the action that exposed/revealed to the world what exactly happened and what did happened.

Challenges and difficulties in getting information, especially from the local population that is beholden to the polluters for employment also be their obstacle to exposed green crime that happened in our world.

However, not all of them are willing to sacrifice their life for the sake of environment. Some of them have been bribed to keep quiet on certain issues.

Is it what we are looking for? We close our eyes because we are chasing towards development, wealth and glory. Is nobody are concern on what exactly happened behind it, we will heading a lot more problem related to environment and nature. More disaster will be arising.

Praise and pray that their life will be protected, so they could feed us with their report, journal and news that contain a lot of information so we could open our eyes widely to see the truth.

4) Humanity or money?

Is it a result from greedy development without any humanity aspect and only for sake of business?

Why : Uncontrolled development and greed that lead to heavy pollution and bring danger to villagers, animals and aquatic life.

Source : Pollution that come from mineral mining on heavy metal that used for battery, computer parts and electronic devices that contaminated the lake.

Result : People (villagers), animals and also aquatic life that mostly died from air or water pollution. Villagers died from cancer and ingestion of pollution water. Fish and other aquatic life/plant died because cannot live in polluted water. Animals died from directly drinking contaminated water.

Who are the victims : Villagers

Who to be blame : Industrialist because did not care what they done and government because not take any responsibility.

Precaution : Nothing! The local mine only take responsibility to give some money for the villagers for their medical expenses.

Fact : This means the mine admits it is polluting the environment. If it did no wrong, it won’t give out his money.

Contaminated water from the lake flow to the river and other area, and run through to plantation area, other water source and also to groundwater. And of course it has affected crops such as paddy field and water bodies.
Imagine they produce any product from the contaminated source and it has been sold to other part in their countries. And even worse, has been exported to other countries. The issue like milk powder that has been contaminated with melamine will be arising again.

Is this what we looking and hope for? To have a lot of money and to increase economy, life of another human just have been ignored because they are nobody.

3) Development..Environment

Sustainable Development is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for future generations. Sustainable development ties together concern for the carrying capacity of natural systems with the social challenges facing humanity. The field of sustainable development can be conceptually broken into three constituent parts: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and sociopolitical sustainability. [Wikipedia]

Based on those cartoons, does it have any meaning to you, me and others?

In order to develop or been labeled as a developed country, of course we are focusing more on what to be done to generate our economy growth. In Malaysia, due to our status as a developing country, there a lot of business opportunity (small, medium or big) rather than environment program. And that contribute to a quite number of businessmen or industrialist, compared to environmentalist. In conjunction with that, environment aspects have been neglected and it is not right because we need to sustain our environment together with our development because we want both of it moving together. Therefore, we are needed to consider what has been done and what should be done to protect/preserve our environment. Environmental issues such as water pollution that leads to scarcity of water and air pollution that contributes to global warming etc, that could affect our health and well being, to be taken care.

It is true that majority of Malaysian doesn’t have awareness conscious or awareness mind. Awareness just for people that taking or been exposed with environmental study or program. Other people that do not have been exposed to any environment field or program, easily taking it for granted. Therefore, it is important to create awareness among all Malaysian. Without awareness, the problem still occurred/lingered because they still repeating things that should not be done such as throwing rubbish into the river and pollute river, pollute air and destroy our forest. Besides that, Government should include awareness in the school syllabus. Not just act as an extra co curricular activity, but to educate our future leader to be more responsible and aware about environment.

Enforcement also needed to control businessmen or industrialist from neglected environmental aspect, and Government bodies should be more stringent. If we become too lenient, we cannot educate others to concern on environment. Bear in mind, we cannot follow directly thing or knowledge from others, but use it as guidelines.

We must think that Earth also has a living soul that need to be taken care. We must let her live in a good environment. Therefore, we must be responsible in whatever action that we do. Awareness is a MUST. We must think a way, what can we do to sustain our environment. We must change our point of view that always lead to this familiar statement, “that this is not my responsibility, what should I care “, or “this is government job, let them do their work”.

From now on, we must ;
- protect our water resource
- protect our forest
- protect our air
- protect our nature

2) Haze

Haze in Malaysia…the never ending problem causes by ‘other’ that effect ‘others’.

Haze is traditionally an atmospheric phenomenon where dust, smoke and other dry particles obscure the clarity of the sky (Wikipedia). Haze affecting us badly during dry season and when will we be free from suffering from haze that cause by ‘other’ as every year we have facing the some problem and our only solution is praying for God to let the rain fall to clean the air..

i) Right now it has impact to me as I suffering cough and sore throat that affect my health which contribute to affect my life and work. Do I need to suffer this kind of things every following year?

ii) Haze is an impact to our country as it been categorized as air pollution (air quality becoming worst day by day). It affected our tourism industry (local or international) as people have been advised to stay at home or limited their outdoor activity. Beside that, it also shorten/limit our view to certain distance and it quite dangerous to the drivers (applicable to all mode of transport) as it could lead to incident and also accident.

iii) Haze also has an impact to community especially to children and elders. People with asthma, breathing problem or lung problem easily could fall sick during haze. Beside that, as nowadays H1N1 become a phenomenal issue, it also could contribute to worsen the H1N1 impact.

Although Indonesia not quite agree been blamed to cause the haze problem to their ASEAN neighbors from their timber and plantation firms that deliberately starting fires to clear land, either for farming or for other use. They (Indonesia government) should be more serious in taking precaution and prevention to cater this problem as it affect the environmental and also living things not only in their countries, but also to their neighbors as it happened mostly every year.

As neighbors, all of us could help to minimize the problem, but the seed of the problem need to be taken care. We sharing the air, but why cannot we sharing the problem..

KUALA LUMPUR - HAZE from forest fires that was shrouding parts of Malaysia will worsen the H1N1 flu situation by causing more respiratory illnesses, a minister said according to reports on Thursday.

1) Green Building in Malaysia

“To become a world-class city, Kuala Lumpur must also be sustainable. To do that, the city must learn how to reduce its carbon footprint by using natural resources more efficiently, re-use resources and reduce waste. One way of doing this is by designing buildings with minimal negative impact on the environment.” [The Star (Central); 21 July, 2009]

I’m totally disagree with the above statement. Just to become a world-class city we need to be sustainable, not because the environmental itself. Although I’m not an environmental activist that against development, I do care about environmental issue as a normal human being living in a world name Earth. “What should we do to sustain all this things for a better tomorrow in the meantime to fulfill our need for a sake of a better living?”..that is the thing that all of us supposed to consider. Let me brief you about Green Building definition itself to clear the cloud.

Green Buildings (Sustainable Buildings / Environmental Buildings) are designed to enhance energy efficiency, promote renewal energy, reduce air-conditioning costs and improve indoor environment quality (both temperature and relative humidity), and in the process, enabling owners to reap financial incentives under the Kyoto Protocol’s clean development mechanism. The World Green Building Council in the US that rates Green Buildings has developed standards and a rating mechanism to certify such buildings (LEED standards) with Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze based on the number of points or credits in line with the recommendations in the ratings standard. Recently, Malaysia has introduced its very own Green Building Index (GBI) on May 21, 2009 as Malaysian Institute of Architects and the Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia jointly develop a rating system (GBI) to rate and monitor green building. There are two (2) sets of the index, one for residential projects and the other for commercial buildings, which the buildings will be rated, and certified depending on their criteria with Silver, Gold and Platinum. The GBI also is a certification tool that provides guidelines for sustainable development and environment-friendly construction.

The idea was to provide opportunities for developers, and building owners to design and construct green, sustainable buildings that could provide a healthier indoor environment that would save on energy and water.

We must understand that going green with energy recovery improves air quality as well as saves 50% of building energy costs. People spend 90% of their time indoors (in the office, at home, inside cars etc) and indoor air is 10 to 100 times more polluted than outside air. Inadequate quantity of outdoor fresh air in most buildings results in a building becoming “sick” and the indoor air has become more polluted through the furnishings in the room. The occupants of such buildings have no specific illness or identifiable cause of discomfort, but show irritating and nagging symptoms. All these things could affect the productivity of the company as it affecting the performance of the people. "People cannot perform well in their task/work when they sick."

Therefore, I totally agree with the Green Building concept as it cater both, on environment aspect (building energy cost saving), and also health of human being (improves indoor air quality). And we could start from now with doing simple tasks such as changing light bulbs to energy- efficient, or doing away with paint, or installing solar heaters for buildings and offices. Government could enforce a law or give some benefit to promote green building for the residential projects and commercial buildings as it really a good method/step towards a sustainable development, not only to satisfy our greedy need to become a-world class city .
